Agile for HR or HR for Agile

Agile for HR or HR for Agile

I came across this lovely visual on Agile HR, done by Dandy People, and it made me think about how often we try to make organizations “Agile” by simply adding more processes.

  • More meetings.

  • More dashboards.

  • More frameworks.

  • And, of course, another PowerPoint titled “Our Agile Transformation Journey.” 😄

Most organizations attempt one half of this poster and wonder why the transformation stalled.

But Agile HR is actually much simpler.

It is about changing how we think about people and work.

A few things stood out for me:

🔹 Move from control to trust

People don't become more productive because we add another approval layer.

🔹 Build cross-functional teams

The customer doesn't care which department owns the problem. Why should we?

🔹 Experiment and learn quickly

Don't spend six months designing the perfect HR program. Try, learn, improve, and repeat.

🔹 Use data, not assumptions

Employee experience should be treated like a product. Listen to people, test ideas, and use evidence to improve.

🔹 Give teams autonomy with alignment

Autonomy without direction creates chaos. Direction without autonomy creates frustration. Agile tries to find the balance.

🔹 Make people awesome

Perhaps the simplest idea in the entire framework. HR should enable people to do their best work, not make their work harder.

The biggest takeaway for me?

Agile is not about doing things faster. It is about creating value faster.

And that applies to HR just as much as it applies to technology, product development or project management.

Maybe the real Agile HR question is not:

“How can we make employees follow the process better?”

It is:

“How can we design the workplace so people can do great work with fewer unnecessary obstacles?”

That sounds like a much better place to start.

Proud to say that HR function at Crisil is quite Agile and listens to the employees.
