FootGolf is an outdoor sport invented using hybrid rules & infrastructure of football & golf. Its name – FootGolf is derived from ‘Football’ and ‘Golf’. Footgolf is played in shortened golf course with 21” football. In FootGolf, players kick a ball into a cup in as few shots as possible.
What are rules?
Footgolf is played in a manner similar to golf except that the ball is football & ball is kicked instead of being hit with club. The cup is 21” cup instead of usual golf hole and game is played using regulation No. 5 soccer ball. In FootGolf, players kick a ball into a cup in as few shots as possible.
Similar to Golf course, there are 9 holes or 18 holes versions are available. Although it is played on golf courses, it also could be played on specific kind of footgolf grass courses.
In footgolf, players wear polo T’s and use soccer cleats.
What is its history?
About 6 years ago, Footgolf was invented in Netherlands. And in 2010, it has come to Argentina & has since then flourished. In June 2012, 3 countries formed the Federation of International footgolf & the first footgolf world cup was held in Hungary in same month. First inaugural world cup of Footgolf was played in 2012 & won by Hungary. Second world cup played in 2014 was won by Argentina.
Traditionally golf is hobby of the elite however majority of footgolf players are defectors from soccer or golf. Footgolf emerges as one of the alternatives to golf, who cannot afford high cost of golf equipment’s.
In some golf courses, golf as well as footgolf is being played together.
Footgolf has come as great relief to golf course owners when several golf courses are shutting down due to escalating cost & declining participation.
Which countries are playing it?
Presently, footgolf’s international governing body has 28 countries registered with it including, US, Belgium, Netherlands, Hungary & UK. The game is being dominated by Argentina due to raw talent available in the country. Several leagues have been formed in the country. Christian Otero, 36, is Argentina’s top ranked player & leading the players in competition.
