As we daily read in a newspaper that PET bottle is not only a major source of pollution but the face of pollution & found in abundance at the bottom of the ocean. Coco cola alone sells over 110 billion PET bottles every year. So, you can imagine the number of bottles being consumed annually worldwide. So, why don’t we use environment-friendly glass bottles instead of PET bottles?
However, that is not the case as it will surprise you. I was surprised when I read the following statistics to understand why PET bottle is eco-friendly.
A PET bottle is only $0.01 cheaper to make, but it is Fourteen times lighter. An empty 330 ml PET bottle weights 18g while an equivalent glass bottle weighs up to 250g. Being heavier, glass bottles need 40% more fuel to transport, so emission of CO2 shoots up. Due to this, the cost of transportation increases at least Five times.
Again washing glass bottles with hot water increases CO2 emissions and the detergent used pollutes water.
So if we recycle glass bottles at least Twenty times then only they are cost effective. However, on an average glass bottle breaks in Eighteen trips.
